Freeport, MN–The Black Sox took on another division rival, the Randall Cubs on Sunday in Freeport. Eric Thilquist walked in the second inning and later scored on a Ryan Drew single to give the Cubs the early lead. Freeport answered in the bottom of the second. Chad Hess led off the inning with a base hit and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Erik Freeman. In the third, catcher Lincoln Haugen scored on a misplayed bunt and Ryan Tschida scored on a Grant Hess sacrifice fly to give final runs of the game. Peter Burg stifled the Cubs the rest of the way earning his second win of the year. Burg finished the day giving up four hits and striking out ten. First basemen Troy Frieler was the only Freeport player to finish with multiple hits going 2-4 with a double. With the weekend sweep the Black Sox are now 3-1 in Victory League play.

Craig Meyer, Sox push past Royalton 6-1

Royalton, MN–In a Victory League West Division match-up the Black Sox traveled to Royalton to take on the Riverdogs last Saturday. Craig Meyer got his first start of the year for the Black Sox and did not disappoint. Meyer threw a complete game three hit gem with three walks and seven strikeouts. The Sox chipped away at Riverdogs starter Matt Gottwalt scoring runs in four innings. Ryan Tschida paced the Sox attack with three hits and three runs batted in. Erik Freeman added three hits with a pair of doubles and Troy Frieler added a two run double. Black Sox pitcher Nate Winter proved to a be a valuable asset to the squad filling in the designated hitter role for the second time this season. While Winter did not get a hit, he did add an RBI and a run scored.

Peter Burg selected Victory League Pitcher of the Week for Week 1

Congrats to Peter Burg for being named Victory League Pitcher of the Week for his 13 strikeout performance against St. Mathias. Peter has won a gift certificate to Zylka’s Red Bull Bar in Little Falls. “I can’t wait to use my gift certificate to buy post-game pizzas and pitchers for my teammates” said Burg upon hearing of his honor.

Black Sox lose home opener to Rebels 15-9

Freeport, MN–The Fort Ripley Rebels and the Freeport Black Sox squared off Sunday afternoon in the KTLF 960am Victory League “Game of the Week”. A leadoff walk issued by Sox starting pitcher Nate Klaphake to Austin Schmolke resulted in a run scored for the Rebels on a single by Nick Jelacie. The Black Sox tied the game up in the forth inning on a leadoff walk to Erik Freeman who scored on a Nate Mettenberg single. The Rebels put up a five spot and knocked out Sox pitcher Nate Klaphake in the fifth inning as they took the lead and never looked back. The Rebels added 2 in the seventh, 4 in the eighth, and 3 in the ninth. Nate Klaphake ended with a line of 4.1 innings pitched, 5 hits, 6 runs, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Danny Beste came on in relief for 3.2 innings and Craig Meyer tossed the ninth. Nick Jelacie paced the Rebel offense with 4 hits and 4 RBI. Ray Austin added 3 hits. Winning pitcher Brett Kramer gave up 2 hits on 3 runs while whiffing 10 and walking 7. Kramer also had 3 hits and scored 3 runs. The Sox offense was lead by second baseman Nate Mettenberg who was 3-5 with a double and 2 RBI. Eric Eveslage had 3 hits, Ryan Tschida added a pair, and designated hitter Nate Winter had a double with 3 RBI.

Sox win 8-2 in Victory League Debut at St. Mathias

St. Mathias, MN–The Black Sox traveled with an opening day roster of 10 to take on the St. Mathias Devils in the Black Sox first game as members of the Victory League. Former St. Scholastica Saint Peter Burg took the hill for the Sox. In the bottom of the first Jake Francis singled and scored on a Zach Heidmann double for the only Saints runs of the day. Winning pitcher Peter Burg finished the day giving up 5 hits, fanning 13 while issuing 0 walks in 7 innings of work. Danny Beste threw the final 2 innings giving up 0 hits and striking out 1. The Sox wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning as Ryan Tschida doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sox first baseman Troy Frieler. Freeport added 3 more runs in the forth to take the lead for good. Shortstop Eric Eveslage finished the day 3-5 with a double and 2 RBI. Ryan Tschida added 3 hits. Lincoln Haugen and Erik Freeman each added a pair of singles with an RBI. Josh Haberman took the loss in 7 innings of work for the Devils.

The main event of the Sunday occurred at the St. Mathias Bar and Grill after the game when Black Sox utility infielder and pitcher Nate “Big Kat” Klaphake attempted to eat 2 Triple Cheeseburgers. The second triple cheeseburger was declared the winner as Klaphake was only able to finish half of it.

5th Annual Black Sox Tournament Field Set

The 5th Annual Black Sox Tournament from May 18-20 will be c0-hosted with the Avon Lakers. The New Market Muskies replace the Upsala Blue Jays in the only change from last year’s field. Games will take place in Freeport and Avon on Friday-Saturday and the final day being played in Freeport.
