Black Sox take home 7th Annual Black Sox Tournament Championship

For the first time in tournament history, the Black Sox hosted the entire tournament at Black Sox Park.  The newly installed lights allowed for 2 games Friday evening, 5 on Saturday, and 3 on Sunday.

Game Summaries (All games 7 innings)

Freeport 18 Ultimate Snappers 0

Eric Eveslage moved back into the lead-off role and got the first ever night game with lights at Black Sox started in grand fashion.  He blasted a Logan Birr pitch over the right center wall for a lead-off home run in the bottom of the 1st inning.

The Sox bats came alive following Eveslage’s first inning blast.  Freeport put up 18 runs on 17 hits in 4 innings as the game was cut short due to the 10 run rule after 5 innings.

Not to be out-done by the Sox hitting performance, pitcher Mike Frericks threw a complete game no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and 1 walk.  Frericks was also 2-4 at the plate with 2 runs scored and a 2B.  Frericks recently completed his junior year with the Wayne State Wildcats.

Grant Hess hit a 3 run blast in the 2nd.  The Sox center fielder finished the day perfect, going 3-3 with 5 RBI.  Eveslage went 3-4 with 3 RBI.  Jason Tschida chipped in 3 singles.  Carter Sawyer was 2-3 with a 2B and a sacrifice bunt.  Ryan Tschida was a perfect 2-2 with a 3B.

Freeport 3 Upsala 2

Eric Eveslage’s 1st inning lead-off walk was followed up by a pair of singles from Lincoln Haugen and Chad Hess.  Eveslage scored on DH Mike Frericks sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Blue Jays right-hander John Fuchs settled after the 2nd and did not allow the Sox any opportunities the remainder of the game.  Sox veteran left-hander Nate Winter went 4 1/3 innings giving way to Craig Meyer.  Meyer came into a tough spot with runners on 1st and 3rd protecting a 1 run lead but the veteran right-hander got a fly ball to the first baseman and a weak ground ball for a 1-3 putout.  Nate Winter earned the win, while Meyer notched the save.

Freeport 3 Rooster’s 2

The championship game pitted the Black Sox against the Class A North St. Paul Rooster’s.  Black Sox starter Ben Bruggeman was forced to leave after 1 1/3 inning due to an arm injury.  Nate Klaphake came on in replace Bruggeman and threw 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to guide the Sox to the championship victory.

The Sox had to come from behind for the first time all tournament.  After trailing 2-0 after 2 the Sox got things doing in the 3rd inning.  Carter Sawyer led off with a single and later scored on a Mike Frericks single.

The Sox tied things up in the 4th when Erik Freeman drew a lead off walk.  Jason Tschida added a bunt single and Carter Sawyer continued his perfect day adding an RBI single, scoring Freeman.
